Geometric play. This small dining nook was designed by Kimball Starr Interior Design in San Francisco. Starr says her clients wanted the area off the kitchen to be used as an activity nook for playing board games with friends; she added a touch of grown‐up glamour with impressive geometric pendants and a custom banquette upholstered in a playful fabric.
Massive paper lantern. Suspended over the table like a full moon, the paper lantern is on a grand scale, making this dining space so impressive. And while an authentic Noguchi paper lantern is stunning, there are paper lanterns available at all prices and in all sizes.
Different chairs at the ends. The end chairs don't need to be upholstered to be different – a pair in a style that's different from the rest is all you need to mix things up. Here, café chairs are on the long sides of the table and beautiful cane‐back side chairs are at the ends.
Different chairs, same upholstery. Unify a group of lovely chairs, old or new, by having them re‐covered in the same fabric. In the dining room featured here, three different pairs of chairs were all covered in similar fabric to create a "set".
